Happy Thursday Coachella Valley Seniors!

This Week: Desert Arc

Some organizations do such steady work that they become part of the valley’s backbone before most people realize how much they are doing. Desert Arc is one of those places. The nonprofit says it has been championing the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1959, and its mission is to enhance quality of life while creating real opportunities for the people it serves.

What makes Desert Arc especially worth knowing about is how practical its work is. The organization’s Palm Desert campus supports development programs, employment services, and transportation, while its business services include shredding, recycling, janitorial work, landscaping, and fulfillment. That means their work is not tucked away from daily valley life. It is woven directly into it.

The client-services side is just as important. Desert Arc says its development programs give adults opportunities for socialization, skill building, community activities, pre-vocational training, volunteerism, arts and leisure exploration, and self-advocacy. For readers who are always looking for worthwhile local institutions to support, this is exactly the kind of one to keep in mind.

It is the sort of organization that improves a community both quietly and constantly.

This Week: The Front Porch, Palm Springs

117 La Plaza, Palm Springs, CA 92262

The Front Porch feels like the kind of downtown Palm Springs place you almost want to keep to yourself. The restaurant describes itself as intimate and inviting, with art inside and al fresco dining outside on both the sidewalk and patio, and that tracks with the whole appeal. It sounds like somewhere you go when you want conversation to last longer than the check.

The menu makes it even easier to picture. Their avocado toast comes with shaved hard boiled eggs, cherry tomatoes, arugula, goat cheese, and balsamic glaze. The bagel and lox layers smoked salmon, avocado, capers, tomato, and red onion, and the strawberry banana brûlée waffle arrives with banana whipped cream and fresh strawberry jam.

There is a little variety here, too, without the menu feeling scattered. If you lean savory later in the day, the baked brie comes with hazelnuts, date jam, Asian pears, and baguette, while the sesame-crusted Hawaiian ahi and chilled smoked salmon flatbread both sound like the sort of dishes that reward taking your time.

Palm Desert Aquatic Center is still in phased reopening mode

If you have been waiting for the Palm Desert Aquatic Center to come fully back online, this is worth keeping an eye on. The city says the center is now on schedule for a phased reopening that began in April and continues through May 2026, after delays tied to equipment manufacturing and delivery.

Rancho Mirage keeps a volunteer page built with retirees in mind

This is one of those useful local pages that feels very on-brand for this readership. Rancho Mirage’s volunteer opportunities page specifically encourages senior citizens to share their time, skills, and experience with the community, which makes it a good bookmark for anyone who has been meaning to get a little more involved.

Check South Palm Canyon bridge traffic before you head into Palm Springs

Not glamorous, but very useful. The city’s street closure and detour page says traffic on South Palm Canyon Drive shifted to the newly built western bridge span in March, with one lane in each direction while the eastern span closes for the next phase of construction. Businesses in the area remain open, but the city is urging drivers to expect delays and use alternate routes when possible.
