This Week: Palm Springs Cultural Center

Some places in the valley become part of people’s weekly rhythm without ever feeling routine. Palm Springs Cultural Center has that quality. The organization says it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2007, and its campus supports film, live performances, theatre, lectures, art, festivals, and community programs that keep people coming back for very different reasons.

What makes it especially worth highlighting this week is how much it offers at once. The Cultural Center’s current listings include the Palm Springs 70MM Fest from May 29 through 31, a June 1 screening of Some Like It Hot, and an ongoing run of community-centered programming that gives the place a real neighborhood feel rather than a one-off event vibe.

That community side matters here. The center says its programs are designed to connect neighbors and friends through year-round gatherings, and its broader mission speaks to using arts and cultural programs to open minds and discover what connects people. In a place like Palm Springs, that makes this more than a venue. It is part of the civic fabric.

It is the sort of institution that gives a city more life between the big events.

This Week: Kitchen 86, Palm Desert

73-130 El Paseo, Suite I, Palm Desert, CA

Kitchen 86 sounds like the kind of Palm Desert spot that can handle whatever sort of outing you have in mind. The restaurant says it is locally owned and independent, with brunch, lunch, dinner, and late-night service, and its patio faces both the mountains and El Paseo, which is already a pretty convincing argument for an easy desert meal.

The brunch menu makes it even easier to picture. There is a berry Belgian waffle with mascarpone crème fraîche and berries, a boom boom chicken and waffles plate with Thai chili glaze, and Norwegian lox with capers, onion, cream cheese, and fresh fruit. If you lean savory, the carnitas Benedict and California scramble both sound like the sort of dishes that make lingering feel justified.

What helps this one feel especially useful for the newsletter is the flexibility. The restaurant says brunch is served daily on the remodeled patio, which makes it a good pick whether you are planning a weekday catch-up or a slower weekend start.

Rancho Mirage is getting ready for Taste of Summer

This is a useful one to keep in mind now rather than later. The City of Rancho Mirage says Taste of Summer Rancho Mirage is an annual tradition that helps local restaurants during the slower months while also raising money for nonprofits, which makes it an easy program to watch if you like dining deals with a local upside.

Palm Desert just opened a new affordable housing community

KESQ reports that Crossings at Palm Desert officially opened this month with 176 low-cost apartment units on the north side of the city near Dick Kelly Drive and Gateway Drive. Eighty-seven of those units are reserved for families who received housing vouchers through the Housing Authority of Riverside County, which makes this one of the more concrete local housing updates the valley has seen lately.

Rancho Mirage Library lends out California State Parks passes

This feels exactly like the sort of quiet local perk worth bookmarking. Rancho Mirage Library says patrons can check out California Parks Passes, tabletop telescopes, and even hiking backpacks, which makes the place useful for more than books alone.
