This Week: Hidden Harvest

Fresh fruits and vegetables can be difficult to keep on the grocery list when prescriptions, utilities, and other bills come first. Hidden Harvest helps close that gap by rescuing produce that local packing houses cannot send to market.

The organization also purchases seasonal harvests from small local farmers. That brings more variety to its distributions while supporting the agricultural families growing food here in the valley.

Its Senior Markets bring free produce directly to affordable housing communities and senior centers in Coachella, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Springs, and Cathedral City. These pop-up markets are arranged like small farmers markets, allowing visitors to select the fruits and vegetables they will actually use.

The result is practical help delivered with dignity. Grocery budgets stretch a little farther, good food stays out of the waste stream, and neighbors have another welcoming place to connect.

You can view upcoming distributions, make a donation, or recommend an additional Senior Market location through Hidden Harvest.

This Week: Billy Reed’s, Palm Springs

1800 N. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA

Billy Reed’s has been serving Palm Springs since 1975, and it still feels like the place to go when you want an unhurried meal and familiar American comfort food. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The menu covers plenty of ground, but the chicken pot pie is a good place to begin. It comes with a creamy chicken-and-vegetable filling beneath a crisp crust. Other longtime favorites include meatloaf with brown gravy or tomato sauce, slow-roasted prime rib after 5 p.m., and the house-made soups.

Save room for the bakery case. Lemon meringue pie, strawberry cheesecake, Boston cream pie, carrot cake, and the old-fashioned caramel pecan cinnamon roll all make a convincing argument for dessert.
